Huntsville, AL Landscaping Rules: Tree Trimming (2026)

Huntsville Code Sec. 27-56 sets pruning clearances for vegetation along sidewalks, streets, alleys, other rights-of-way, traffic signals and signs, and street lighting by tying them to the sight-triangle standard in Sec. 25-462. That standard caps hedges, shrubbery, fences, and natural growth at 30 inches above street level inside the visibility triangle near intersections and driveways, though small trees under 12 inches trunk diameter are exempt if trimmed bare to at least 15 feet above the roadway. Under Sec. 25-461, the city engineer enforces this with written notice, a 14-day cure period, then a misdemeanor citation to municipal court if the obstruction is not corrected.
