Jacksonville Tree Protection Ordinance (Ordinance Code Chapter 656, Part 12) regulates pruning of protected trees. Permit required for major pruning of regulated trees (generally DBH 6" or greater). Improper pruning treated as removal.
Chapter 656, Part 12 of the Jacksonville Ordinance Code governs tree protection. Protected trees include most species with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 6 inches or greater on residential property. Routine maintenance pruning is allowed, but removal of more than 25% of the canopy or improper topping is considered destruction and requires a permit plus mitigation. ANSI A300 pruning standards apply. Historic and heritage trees (DBH 30"+) receive heightened protection.
Unpermitted major pruning or topping treated as tree removal. Fines based on tree value plus mitigation (replacement inches or payment into tree trust fund). Stop-work orders possible.
