West Jordan, UT Landscaping Rules: Tree Trimming (2026)

Section 13-18-10(E) makes it unlawful to top a public tree without Urban Forester authorization, and requires all pruning to follow the current ANSI A300 pruning standard. 1 puts the pruning duty on the property owner: every owner of a tree overhanging a street or right-of-way must prune the branches so they do not block emergency vehicle access, streetlamp light, the view of a street intersection, or a pedestrian's use of the sidewalk. 2 sets the numeric standard, a clear space of fourteen feet between the street surface and the tree and eight feet between the sidewalk surface and the tree, measured at all possible perpendiculars.

3 requires the owner to remove dead, dangerous, broken, or decayed limbs that hazard public safety. 4 gives the city its own authority: it can prune any tree or shrub on private property that interferes with sidewalk or street use, blocks a traffic control device or sign, or obstructs an intersection sight triangle or city streetlight, and can bill the property owner for the equipment, vehicle, and crew cost of that work. Trees growing under utility wires or other obstructions where standard pruning is impracticable can be exempted from the section with the Urban Forester's prior approval.
