Sandy requires trees overhanging public sidewalks to maintain 8 feet vertical clearance and 14 feet over streets. Property owners are responsible for trimming trees on their property and in the park strip adjacent to their lot.
Under Sandy City Code Title 12, property owners must keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they don't obstruct sidewalks (8 ft clearance), streets (14 ft clearance), traffic signs, or streetlights. This includes vegetation in the park strip between the sidewalk and curb, which is considered the adjacent owner's maintenance responsibility. Trees on private property that block neighbor property lines follow Utah common law: the neighbor may trim branches up to the property line at their own cost but cannot enter the neighbor's yard. Sandy's Parks & Urban Forestry Division manages street trees on public property and issues permits for removal or major pruning of those trees.
First notice: 14 days to trim. Non-compliance: $100-$250 + city contractor trimming cost ($200-$800) billed with lien risk. Damage to protected street tree: $500-$2,500.
