Sandy, UT Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 21-24-4, Residential Parking Requirements And Restrictions, sets Sandy's driveway and yard-parking standard. All areas used for parking vehicles at a residence, including the front, side, and rear yard, must be paved with a hard surface such as concrete, asphalt, or brick; parking on landscaped areas or areas reserved for future landscaping is flatly prohibited. The code then caps how much of the yard can be turned into hard surface: no more than 20 percent of the front yard, excluding the driveway leading to the primary garage, no more than 35 percent of the rear yard, and only one of the two side yards on the lot.

Circular driveways get a case-by-case exception to that front-yard cap. Three exceptions soften the hard-surface mandate: a six-inch gravel base meeting City specifications may be used to store recreational vehicles as long as it stays weed-free; single-family properties with animal rights may store animal transport trailers off a hard surface within the rear setback; and passenger vehicles used for daily transportation at a residence that predates the hard-surface requirement are exempt, with the resident bearing the burden of proving the exemption applies. The section also limits junk vehicles to one per lot, stored outside a structure, screened by a six-foot opaque fence if visible from the street on a corner lot, and covered with a purpose-made vehicle cover rather than a tarp.
