Sandy, UT Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 21-28-3 sets Sandy's residential fence standards. In a required side or rear yard, fence height cannot exceed six feet. In a required front yard, solid-type fences are capped at three feet and open-type fences, such as wrought iron, at four feet. Corner lots carry extra rules: any fence, wall, or hedge on the front yard setback is capped at three feet if opaque or four feet if open construction, and the side yard setback fronting a street can rise to six feet only beyond 60 feet from the intersection, measured from the intersecting extended curb lines; within that 60-foot zone the front-yard limits apply.

A clear view zone must stay free of fencing where a driveway exists on the adjacent lot within ten feet of the shared property line, except for a see-through fence or a view-obscuring fence no taller than three feet; that triangular zone is measured back ten feet from where the shared interior property line meets the public right-of-way line. Fences on slopes may reach a maximum of seven feet if their average height is no more than six feet six inches. Fence posts, gate posts, pillars, and support columns may extend 12 inches above the maximum fence height when separated by at least six linear feet of fencing, and structures cannot exceed 18 inches in diameter or width.

Height is measured from the highest grade, and the combined height of a fence plus retaining wall cannot exceed 11 feet. Approved materials are lumber, vinyl, chainlink, wrought iron, precast concrete panels, concrete block, or other solid durable materials the Director approves.
