West Jordan, UT Parking Rules: Abandoned Vehicles (2026)

Under section 13-8-2 of the West Jordan City Code, it is unlawful to park, store, or leave any licensed or unlicensed motor vehicle, or parts of one, on private or public property within city limits for longer than seventy-two hours if the vehicle is wrecked, junked, partially dismantled, inoperative, or abandoned, whether attended or not. The rule reaches parts as well as whole vehicles, so a stripped chassis or a stack of body panels sitting in a driveway counts the same as a dead car.

Subsection B makes that accumulation a nuisance, detrimental to the health, safety, and welfare of city residents, and it assigns the duty to remove the vehicle or parts to whoever is positioned to act: the vehicle's owner, a lessee, or any other person in possession of the property where the vehicle sits. Two exceptions apply. Inoperable vehicles may be stored inside a completely enclosed building, so a car up on jack stands inside a closed garage does not trigger the ordinance. Licensed and operating automobile wrecking yards and automobile repair facilities are also exempt from the 72-hour rule, though they still must comply with the screening and fencing requirements found elsewhere in title 13.

Because the ordinance is framed as a nuisance provision, the city can pursue abatement in addition to prosecuting a code violation. The 72-hour clock runs continuously; there is no seasonal exception and no minimum lot size that exempts a property from the rule.
