West Jordan, UT Noise Ordinances: Aircraft Noise (2026)

Title 13, chapter 6, article A of the West Jordan City Code establishes five airport overlay zones layered onto the base zoning map around Salt Lake City Municipal 2 Airport: the Clear Zone (Acl), Approach Zone (Aa), Noise Zone (An), Horizontal Zone (Ah) and Conical Zone (Ac). Section 13-6A-2(C) defines the Noise Zone (An) as the area bounded by the projected 65 decibel airport activity noise contour. Most commercial, industrial, public and residential uses are still allowed inside the An zone under the permitted-and-conditional-use table at section 13-6A-4, but section 13-6A-5(B) layers on a specific mitigation duty for lodging: every hotel or motel proposed in the An zone must submit construction techniques with its site plan showing how noise inside the dwelling units will be reduced to 65 decibels or less, and the building official reviews and signs off on those techniques before construction proceeds.

The airport overlay zones supersede the regulations of whatever base zone they sit on top of whenever the two conflict, per section 13-6A-2(G). Boundaries come from the official airport overlay map kept on file with the city recorder and development services department, built from Salt Lake City Corporation's airport area-of-influence data developed with the FAA. The article also carries a formal disclaimer under section 13-6A-2(D): the city takes on no liability for aircraft noise or hazards affecting land outside the mapped overlay zones, so a property just beyond the An boundary has no code-based noise protection at all.
