West Jordan, UT Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Chapter 4 of Title 7 sets up West Jordan's truck route system: the city traffic engineer designates routes reflected in the transportation master plan, and trucks, truck-tractors, semitrailers, trailers, and vehicles hauling more than 3,000 gallons of flammable liquid, explosives, or corrosives generally have to stay on those routes. Section 7-4-1(D) layers a noise-specific rule on top of the route system: the mayor or a designee may install signage along truck routes stating that dynamic engine braking devices are prohibited. The section is explicit that using an engine brake within a posted area may be prosecuted as provided in the chapter, tying the noise rule directly to the truck-route enforcement scheme rather than to a separate general noise ordinance.

Because the prohibition depends on posted signage, the ban only applies on the specific routes and segments the city has actually signed; the underlying authority to post those signs and prosecute violations comes from section 7-4-1 itself, most recently amended by Ordinance 26-11 on February 24, 2026, alongside changes to truck parking under the same title. Violations of this chapter, including an engine-brake citation, may be prosecuted as a civil citation or as a Class C misdemeanor under section 7-4-3, the same penalty structure used for the rest of the truck-route rules.
