Grand Prairie, TX Landscaping Rules: Water Restrictions (2026)

Section 26-158 sets Grand Prairie's year-round landscape irrigation schedule. m. Subsection (f) caps every water customer, including city government facilities, at two watering days a week: even-numbered addresses water Mondays and Thursdays, odd-numbered addresses water Tuesdays and Fridays, and any irrigated area without a numbered address gets one assigned by the city. The ordinance also bars letting a substantial amount of water run onto pavement or a street instead of the lawn, running an irrigation system during precipitation, or operating a system with a broken or missing sprinkler head or one that has not been maintained to prevent waste.

Affirmative defenses exist for establishing new hydromulch, sod or seed, dust control on a sports field, system maintenance or testing, and hand-hose watering, but only for thirty consecutive days before the standard restrictions kick back in, and any of those defenses can be suspended if the city has activated its emergency drought contingency plan. Customers using an alternative source such as a well or reclaimed water can avoid the restrictions only if they register the source with the city, let the director inspect it, comply with the city's backflow and cross-connection control program and Unified Development Code Article 8, and post a sign at the road frontage identifying the alternative source.

Commercial, industrial and governmental irrigation systems installed on or after January 1, 2012 must carry working rain and freeze sensors under Section 26-159, inspected annually.
