Grand Prairie, TX Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 25-57(a) of the Grand Prairie Code of Ordinances prohibits stopping, parking or standing any vehicle with three or more axles or a manufacturer-rated capacity over one and one-half tons on a public street, alley, parkway, boulevard or public place within or adjacent to a residentially zoned area. The rule targets big rigs, dump trucks and heavy delivery vehicles rather than ordinary pickups, since the axle-count and tonnage test excludes most personal trucks. Subsection (b) lists nine narrow carve-outs: street construction and repair equipment, public-service company vehicles expanding service, authorized emergency vehicles, city-owned vehicles on city business, city franchisee vehicles, buses picking up or discharging passengers at customary stops, church buses parked on church lots, vehicles actually using a designated loading zone, and vehicles disabled by mechanical defects for the time needed to make emergency repairs.

Subsection (d) separately bans parking any detached truck-trailer or tractor-trailer, meaning the cab cannot be unhitched and left on a residential street or any public property in the city, even briefly. The ordinance was adopted by Ord. No. 5730, § 11, on February 4, 1997, and has not been amended since. Enforcement runs through the city's administrative adjudication system for stopping, standing and parking offenses (Article VII of Chapter 25): a police officer, parking enforcement officer, or other city employee issues a citation, and the registered owner is presumed to be the person who parked the vehicle.

The Unified Development Code, a separate instrument this file does not contain, sets the residential zoning district boundaries referenced in subsection (a), but the parking ban itself, its exemptions and its penalty are fully contained in Chapter 25.
