Grand Prairie, TX Landscaping Rules: Tree Trimming (2026)

Section 29-87, 'Trees, shrubs and sight obstructions,' sets four separate clearance standards for vegetation across Grand Prairie. First, no tree, shrub, vine, or similar plant may overhang or obtrude on any dedicated alleyway, street, or highway unless there is a full fourteen-foot clearance between the street surface and the overhanging vegetation. Second, vegetation over any public sidewalk must clear the sidewalk surface by a full seven feet. Third, no tree, shrub, vine, or hedge may grow between the sidewalk and the curb or ditch line closer than seven and one-half feet to any fire hydrant in the city.

Fourth, at street-corner sight triangles measuring thirty feet along each curb from the intersection point, nothing (tree, shrub, plant, fence, or other obstruction) may exceed thirty inches in height above the street gutter flow line, and any tree in that triangle cannot have branches or foliage lower than eight feet from the gutter flow line. Where curbs do not exist, the code substitutes the central flow line of the roadside ditch, as determined by the city engineer, for the curb line in measuring these distances. The section applies citywide to any tree, shrub, vine, hedge, or similar plant regardless of who planted it or when.
