Santa Clara participates in the Santa Clara County weed abatement program. Noxious weeds and dry vegetation are public nuisances subject to notice, abatement, and cost recovery.
Overgrown weeds, dry grass, and rank vegetation are treated as public nuisances under Santa Clara City Code and the countywide weed abatement ordinance administered by Santa Clara County Fire. Each spring, inspectors identify parcels with hazardous vegetation; owners receive a written notice and may request a hearing before the Board of Supervisors or city council equivalent. If owners do not abate, contractors hired by the county clear the hazard and costs are assessed as a lien on the parcel, collected on the property tax roll. Ongoing nuisance weeds during the year may also be addressed through Code Enforcement. Invasive species such as yellow starthistle and medusahead are priorities. Maintained lawns, ornamental grasses, and certified landscapes are not targeted.
