Troy, MI Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

1 of Chapter 82 states that "the presence of turf grass and/or weeds exceeding eight (8) inches in height on any premises in the City is hereby declared to be a nuisance," and requires the owner, occupant or any person controlling the property to cut it back to eight inches or less. Three exceptions apply: designated preservation or restoration areas containing no turf grass or weeds, wetland or preservation areas designated by Michigan's DNR or DEQ, and cultivated flowers, gardens or small grain crop fields such as wheat, corn, oats, barley or rye.

2 places an ongoing duty on the owner or occupant to cut and destroy weeds so they do not perpetuate or go to seed. 3 authorizes the City or its agent to enter the premises as many times as necessary between May 1 and November 1 to cut or treat the vegetation if the owner fails to abate. 4 requires the Planning Director to publish the cutting requirement in the City's newspaper of record each March, and allows the City to send a ten-day warning notice by first-class mail before entering, though publication alone is sufficient legal notice even without the individual warning.

5 lets the Planning Director recover wages, overtime, equipment, supplies and materials, plus a ten percent administration charge, as an invoice; if unpaid within thirty days it becomes an assessment and lien against the property.
