West Hartford, CT Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Section 115-22 of the Code of the Town of West Hartford sets landscaping standards townwide. Subsection A requires all landscaping, including shrubs, hedges, grass and plants, to avoid hindering neighboring properties, blocking sidewalks or streets, obstructing utility lines, or crossing property boundaries, and to meet the standards of Zoning Chapter 177, § 177-24. Subsection B is the core height rule for improved lots: no owner or occupant may let grass, weeds or similar growths exceed one foot on any premises with a building or dwelling on it, whether the structure is occupied or vacant.

Subsection C layers on a tighter six-inch cap for the narrow band of land between a fence or property line and the curbline, and separately bars grass over one foot townwide unless it is being grown for harvest, plus bars ragweed and similar allergenic plants along paved streets if the Director of Health finds they aggravate hay fever. The Town Manager or a designee enforces Chapter 115 under § 115-30, typically through Community Development or a code enforcement officer who issues notice before citing a property.
