Bonita Springs, FL Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Article V of Chapter 40 regulates electric bicycles, electric motorcycles and personal electric powered devices, and Sec. 40-65 was last amended by Ordinance No. 26-07 on 6-3-2026. Subsection (d) covers roadways and bicycle lanes. Under (d)(1), bicycles, electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, electric personal assistive mobility devices, micromobility devices, motorized scooters and similar electric devices are allowed on public roadways and bicycle lanes within the incorporated areas of the City of Bonita Springs over which the city has traffic control jurisdiction. Under (d)(2), the speed cap is the posted speed limit or the statutory speed limit on any public roadway or bicycle lane, and the cap applies to electric motorcycles only when they are not registered under F.S.

Ch. 320. Under (d)(3), a rider or passenger under 16 years of age must wear at least a properly fitted helmet, fastened securely by a strap, that meets the federal safety standard; the code counts a child riding in a trailer or semitrailer as a passenger. Under (d)(4), between dusk and dawn the device needs a front lamp exhibiting a white light visible from at least 500 feet to the front, plus a rear lamp and reflector each exhibiting a red light visible from 600 feet to the rear.

Extra lights or reflectors are allowed. The sidewalk rules in subsection (c) differ: a 15 miles per hour cap applies there, and electric motorcycles registered under F.S. Ch. 320 are prohibited on sidewalks, crosswalks and multi-use pathways. Subsection (e) bars all of these devices from trails, greenways and greenbelts unless the city posts otherwise. Subsection (g) authorizes the city to install signage designating or prohibiting operation, and subsection (f) exempts on-duty licensed law enforcement officers.
