Kalamazoo, MI Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

The City of Kalamazoo regulates bicycle riding under Article VII of Chapter 36. Section 36-215.1 grants every person riding a bicycle on a roadway all the rights, and subjects them to all the duties, applicable to the driver of a motor vehicle under the traffic chapter, except provisions that by their nature cannot apply; a rider who dismounts is instead treated as a pedestrian. Section 36-222 requires cyclists to ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable, using due care when passing a standing vehicle or one going the same direction.

Section 36-223 bars riding more than two abreast on a roadway, with a specific exception for paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, where riding more than two abreast is allowed. Section 36-224 is the mandatory-use rule: wherever a usable path for bicycles has been provided adjacent to a roadway, bicycle riders must use that path and may not use the roadway itself. Section 36-225 separately restricts riding on sidewalks, on the Kalamazoo Mall, or within a park wherever signs prohibit it, and requires a cyclist on a sidewalk to yield to pedestrians and signal before passing them. Section 36-227 requires parked bicycles to sit against the curb, in a rack, or against a building, without obstructing pedestrian traffic.
