Perth Amboy, NJ Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Chapter 158, Bicycles, was amended in its entirety 9-9-2024 by Ord. No. 2189-2024, and the amendment wrote designated bike routes into the riding rules of the City of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County. Section 158-8 applies to every bicycle operated within the City, whether or not it is operated under a license issued under the chapter.

On the road or in a bike route, the rules are specific. Riders cannot ride abreast of more than one other person. They must observe all traffic rules, turn only at intersections, signal for all turns, ride at the right-hand side of the street or highway or otherwise ride within any designated bike route, pass slower moving traffic to the left, and pass vehicles to the right when meeting. Under § 158-8(C) a rider cannot coast by inertia with feet off the pedals, remove both hands from the handlebars, practice trick or fancy riding, or carry another person. Under (E) no rider can hold fast to or hitch on to automobiles or other vehicles, and under (F) no bicycle can be ridden faster than is reasonable and proper.

Equipment is fixed by number. At night a bicycle needs a lighted front lamp showing a white light visible at least 200 feet ahead. A red light or red reflector visible at least 200 feet from the rear is required from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise, unless the front lamp also shows red to the rear. Every bicycle needs an audible signal that can be heard easily at a distance of 200 feet.

Sidewalk and boardwalk limits are in § 158-8(D). No one can ride a bicycle, tricycle or powered vehicle on the sidewalks on State Street between Market Street and Fayette Street, or on Smith Street between Elm Street and High Street. On the Boardwalk and Promenade Piers from High Street to Second Street, bicycles and tricycles only are allowed within marked bike routes, between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and from sunrise to 4:00 p.m. from Labor Day to November 30th. The Chief of Police can suspend riding for special events.

The City Bike Share Program under § 158-9 runs annually from May 1 through October 31, sunrise until sunset, and its bicycles must be licensed under the chapter. Bicycle licenses carry no annual fee under § 158-3.
