Piscataway, NJ Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Township Code Chapter 7 governs bicycle lanes and riding conduct. Section 7-32 requires any Bicycle Lane the Township designates to be at least four feet wide, following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, and excludes all motorized vehicles from a Class I Bikeway except emergency vehicles or those needed for its maintenance. No specific lane locations are currently listed in the Township's schedule of designated lanes. Section 7-42, added December 9, 2025 by Ordinance No. 2025-27, applies riding rules to all bicycles operated in the Township, not only electric ones.

Riders must travel in the same direction as vehicular traffic and may move left only to avoid debris or hazards, pass a slower vehicle, make a left turn, or use a bicycle lane on the left side of the roadway. Outside a path or roadway portion expressly marked for bicycle use, riders must travel single file. Electric bicycles are capped at motors under 750 watts and defined by Class 1 (pedal-assist only, cuts off at 20 mph) or Class 2 (throttle-capable, capped at 20 mph).

Required equipment includes a front white lamp and rear red lamp visible 500 feet at night, a bell or signaling device audible 100 feet, and an operable brake; helmets meeting Title 39 standards are mandatory for operators and passengers. Riding on sidewalks is prohibited except where state law allows it, though Township-designated multi-use paths remain open to electric bicycles. The Director of the Department of Public Safety may issue further implementing rules.
