Piscataway, NJ Mobility & Curb Rules: Shared E-Scooter Rules (2026)

Under § 7-41.7, a shared electric scooter company may operate in Piscataway Township only after agreeing with the Township Council on a fleet size, which the Council can raise by resolution no more than once per month; the company may lower its own count without Council action. New entrants get a 90-day pilot with no more than 200 scooters, and the companywide cap across all operators is 600 electric scooters. Operators pay the Township $50 per scooter plus $0.15 per completed trip to fund enforcement and infrastructure, carry commercial general liability coverage of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence, and must disable and store scooters during inclement weather and for 48 hours after a snowfall over five inches.

Riders are barred from sidewalks under § 7-41.4j; anyone caught riding, starting, or stopping a trip on a sidewalk faces a $250 fine for a first offense and $500 for each later occurrence, per § 7-41.5c. Carrying more riders than a scooter is designed for draws a $50 fine for a first offense, rising to $100, under § 7-41.5b. Scooters left more than 48 consecutive hours outside a bike rack, or otherwise inoperable, may be tagged abandoned by Code Enforcement, Public Works, or the Police Department; owners get 48 hours to reclaim before Township seizure, and reclaiming an impounded scooter costs a $100 fee plus $2 per day after 10 days.
