Yonkers, NY Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Yonkers City Code § 109-71C, added February 11, 2025 by Ordinance No. 3-2025, permits an electric mobility device (a Class 1 or Class 2 bicycle with electric assist, or an electric scooter, as defined by NY Vehicle & Traffic Law §§ 102-c and 114-e) to be operated in any bicycle lane or on a public highway if its maximum speed does not exceed 30 miles per hour. On a highway posted above 30 mph, the device may only be ridden if that highway has a separately marked bicycle lane, and then only within that lane.

When on the highway generally, the rider must stay as near the right-hand side as the operator judges safe, to let overtaking traffic pass. Subsection D layers on specific bike-lane conduct rules: an operator may not ride in a bicycle lane against the direction of adjacent motor vehicle traffic unless the lane is specifically designated for two-way use, may not ride between vehicles traveling or standing in the same direction within marked lanes, and may not ride two or more abreast with another electric mobility device or a bicycle.

Riders also cannot carry a package or bundle that keeps a hand off the handlebars, wear a headset covering both ears, use a handheld phone while moving, or ride while impaired. Devices may not be ridden onto a sidewalk or onto a multiuse path unless that path is posted for such use. Enforcement runs through the Yonkers Police Department, and Subsection J sets the penalty for any violation of the section at a fine of up to $250, confinement of up to 10 days, or both.
