Lafayette, IN Mobility & Curb Rules: TNC Pickup Zones (2026)

Lafayette Municipal Code § 7.06.270 covers "Parking of buses, taxicabs and ride shares" inside Chapter 7.06, Stopping, Standing and Parking. Subsection A sets a curb-hugging rule for buses: the right front wheel must stop no more than 18 inches from the curb, roughly parallel to it, so the bus does not block other traffic. Subsection B covers taxicabs and ride-share vehicles: a driver "shall not stand or park such vehicle on any street at any place other than in accordance with other stopping or parking regulations," and only "while actually engaged in the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers." That means a ride-share pickup or drop-off has to happen somewhere parking or standing is already legal under the rest of Chapter 7.06, such as away from fire hydrants, crosswalks, intersections and bus stop zones under § 7.06.130 and § 7.06.180, and it has to be brief: the code's own word is "expeditious." Lafayette has not created a separate network of dedicated TNC pickup curb zones the way some larger cities have; instead, ride-share stops are folded into the general parking code and enforced the same way.

Lafayette police officers and the Parking Operations Supervisor and Parking Enforcement Technicians, authorized under § 1.02.020, can ticket a ride-share vehicle that lingers at a curb outside a legal stopping location. Because § 7.06.270 carries no penalty of its own, a violation falls to the chapter's catch-all fine in § 7.06.990(A)(8): fifty dollars for any Chapter 7.06 violation not otherwise specified.
