Palatine, IL Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Section 22-89 makes it unlawful to operate a loudspeaker, amplifier, radio, phonograph, microphone or other sound-magnifying device over a public street or public place without first securing a permit from the village manager or designee. An applicant must file at least seven days before the event, on the village's form, giving the applicant's name and address, the device owner's name, the intended use date and any other information the village requires. Permits are limited to the hours the village manager grants, and a permit holder cannot operate the equipment within a two-block radius of any hospital, or within two blocks of a church while services are underway there.

Only music or human speech may be broadcast, speakers must be aimed toward open or unoccupied space and away from residential property to the extent feasible, and the volume must be controlled so it is not unreasonably loud, raucous, jarring or disturbing to people of normal sensibilities within earshot. The village manager or designee can attach additional conditions to any permit and may revoke it outright if the sound violates any restriction. No permit may carry lewd, obscene, profane or indecent language, or false advertising claims for anything whose sale the code otherwise prohibits.

The permit requirement does not reach home or vehicle radios played so they are inaudible from 50 feet away, nor to parade or community-event sound equipment operating under its own village-approved permit. School and park district properties running their own affiliated events are exempt from the section entirely.
