Atlanta uses a plainly audible distance test rather than strict dBA caps. Sound audible more than 100 ft from residential sources (or 300 ft commercial) is presumed a violation.
Unlike cities that rely on dBA meter readings, Atlanta Code Β§74-131 through Β§74-136 use a plainly audible standard. The threshold distances are 100 feet in residential districts and 300 feet for commercial or industrial sources during the day (reduced to 100 feet at night). Officers may use a calibrated sound level meter for documentation, but a meter reading is not required for citation. This makes enforcement faster but more subjective. Special permits for amplified events must specify decibel levels and typically cap amplified outdoor sound at 85 dBA at the property line.
Citation under Β§74-131; fines vary by offense and recurrence. Permit violations may void the permit.
