Bossier City, LA Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Two separate Chapter 110 sections cover vehicle noise. Section 110-43, adopted by Ordinance No. 25-2023 on March 7, 2023, outlaws "unmuffled compression braking," also called "engine braking" and "jake braking," specifically on three state highways that run through the city: Benton Road/Highway 3, Airline Drive/LA 3105, and U.S. Highway 71. Subsection (2) lets the city council designate additional prohibited areas by ordinance, backed by regulatory signage the mayor requests through a Louisiana Department of Transportation sign permit; public safety and emergency vehicles are exempt under subsection (3), and a violation draws a flat $250.00 fine under subsection (4).

Separately, Sec. 110-81(e), part of the "Excessive noise resulting from amplified sound" section adopted by Ordinance No. 44-2006, bars operating or occupying a motor vehicle on a street, highway, alley, parking lot or driveway where its sound system is plainly audible 25 feet or more away, the same 25-foot audibility test the section uses for stationary radios and televisions under subsection (c). Parades and processions running under a city permit, and city public-safety vehicles, are exempt. Subsection (f)'s penalty for any Sec. 110-81 violation, including the vehicle-noise clause, is a fine of not less than $100.00 nor more than $500.00 for each offense, up to ten days in jail, or both.

Bossier City Police enforce both sections; the two rules can stack against the same driver if a loud stereo is also run through jake-braked traffic on a covered highway.
