Bossier City, LA Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 13.12.1.A requires fences to be built of materials expressly designed for fencing, wood pickets, chain link, wrought iron, or masonry columns combined with those materials, and maintained in good repair; it also directs applicants to check their subdivision covenants before applying to the City or Parish for a building permit. The base height cap is 7 feet, and anything taller needs Conditional Use approval under Section 3.3.2, granted only where the fence meets at least part of a defined criteria list: it is a component of a Planned Unit Development, it serves as an exterior perimeter fence for lots on highways, other streets or railroads used for compatibility buffers, noise abatement or security, or it sits on a subdivision's exterior perimeter as part of the subdivision's master plan or plat.

Wooden fences taller than 6 feet need at least three cross members to keep the pickets from warping, and construction methods for anything over 7 feet also go through the Conditional Use review. Beyond the base cap, Section 13.12.1.G requires Special Exception Use approval under Section 5.2.4 for any street-yard fence over 4 feet in the RFD, RT and B-Districts, and Section 13.12.1.H lets any residential fence up to 8 feet go through Special Exception Use under Section 3.3.3, provided fences over 7 feet keep at least 20 feet between residences and, where an active Homeowners Association exists, get that association's review too.
