Bossier City, LA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 13.12.1.A first limits ordinary fences to materials expressly designed for the purpose, such as wood pickets, chain link, wrought iron, or masonry columns combined with those materials, kept in a state of good repair. Section 13.12.1.F carves out the sharper, more dangerous materials separately: barbed wire, razor wire, spiked posts and electrified or similar fencing is a permitted use, without discretionary review, only in the R-A Residence Agriculture, A-1 and A-2 airbase buffer, and I-1 and I-2 industrial districts, where security or agricultural use makes it appropriate.

In the B-Districts, the business zones along the city's commercial corridors, this fencing is not permitted by right; an applicant must bring it before the Planning Commission as a Conditional Use following the Section 3.3.2 review procedures, which weighs the request against surrounding uses before approval. Even where the Planning Commission approves it, the fencing cannot be located within 30 feet of the boundary of an R-E, R-LD, R-MD or R-HD residential district, a buffer meant to keep this class of security fencing away from homes.

Because the general materials list in Section 13.12.1.A does not include barbed wire, razor wire, spiked posts or electrified fencing, and Section 13.12.1.F names only R-A, A-1, A-2, I-1, I-2 and conditionally-approved B-District sites, the code leaves no path for this fencing in the R-E, R-LD, R-MD or R-HD residential districts themselves.
