Grand Prairie, TX Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Article XIII of the Grand Prairie Code of Ordinances treats certain vehicle noise as a presumed "noise nuisance" under Sec. 13-277(a). Subsection (3) makes it unlawful to discharge motor vehicle exhaust into the open air except through a muffler or similar device that effectively and efficiently prevents loud and unreasonable noise. Subsection (4) bars continued or frequent sounding of a horn or signal device except as a danger or warning signal. Subsection (5) covers a vehicle so out of repair or overloaded that it emits a loud, unreasonable noise.

Subsection (6) targets stereo systems: playing a stereo, whether mounted in a building or a vehicle, at a volume that disturbs persons within thirty feet, or that unreasonably impairs use of public or private property, is presumed a nuisance regardless of any meter reading. These presumptions feed the general noise-disturbance offense in Sec. 13-278(a), which is violated when a plainly audible or unreasonably disturbing sound is heard at the property line, at the curb, or thirty feet from a public right-of-way, or when it exceeds the Sec.

13-283 sound-level table. Separately, Sec. 13-278(b) makes it a stand-alone offense to use an engine compression brake, a Jake brake, to slow or stop a vehicle anywhere within the Grand Prairie corporate limits; the only defenses are that the vehicle was government-owned fire apparatus or that the brake was used in a genuine emergency to prevent death, injury or property damage. The city's noise director and code enforcement officers, along with police, investigate complaints and may take a sound-level reading under the Sec. 13-276 measurement standard before citing a violation. Prosecutions run through municipal court under the citywide fine schedule in Sec. 1-8.
