Grilling at single-family homes is generally unrestricted. At apartments and condos, the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code bans charcoal and propane grills on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of the building, unless the building is fully sprinklered.
The Cumberland County Fire Marshal and Fayetteville Fire Department enforce the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code for outdoor cooking. At detached one- and two-family homes, backyard grilling is allowed with common-sense clearance from the house. At multi-family buildings (apartments and condos are treated alike), open-flame cooking devices including charcoal and propane grills may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. The exception is a building, including its balconies, protected by an automatic sprinkler system. LP-gas cylinders must be handled per NFPA 58.
Grilling in violation of the balcony or clearance rule is referred to the Fire Prevention Office for code enforcement.
