Sandy, UT Outdoor Cooking: Smoker Rules (2026)

Section 13-11-3 of the Sandy City Code lists prohibited activities inside "City recreational facilities," a term Section 13-11-1 defines to cover parks, recreation areas and recreation centers the City owns, operates or maintains. " That means charcoal grills, smokers, campfires and other open-flame cooking are confined to the fixed barbecue or grill stations the City or Salt Lake County has installed in a given park; portable fire pits, ground fires or smokers set up elsewhere in a park violate the section even if the cook stays nearby to tend the fire.

The same section separately bars fireworks and firearm discharge, and bars burning near flood detention ponds when water is present. " Section 13-11-7 sets the penalty: anyone who violates "any ordinance, rule, instruction or sign within this chapter is guilty of an infraction," unless the same conduct rises to a greater offense under state, county or city criminal law, in which case the higher penalty applies. Section 13-11-7 also lets a City employee with delegated authority evict a violator immediately, and anyone who refuses to leave after being told to do so is separately guilty of violating the chapter.

Sandy Amphitheater, plazas, promenades and golf courses are carved out of the "Park" definition in 13-11-1, so this fire rule does not reach those sites; it applies to the City's standard park and recreation-center inventory.
