Lawton, OK Outdoor Lighting: Billboard Lighting (2026)

Section 18-9-1-907(A) of the Lawton City Code, Off-premise signs, governs billboard lighting as part of its broader dimensional standards for the only sign type the city allows to advertise off-site. Billboards must sit on streets classified as arterials, and are confined to C-4 Tourist Commercial, I-1 Restricted Manufacturing and Warehousing, I-2 Industrial Park, I-3 Light Industrial and I-4 Heavy Industrial districts, never residential or straight commercial zones. Item 8 of that subsection permits direct or indirect illumination without a separate candela or foot-candle limit for standard (non-digital) faces, but the surrounding items constrain where an illuminated face can even be erected: a 25-foot setback from the property line with no cantilevering into the right-of-way, a minimum 900 linear feet of spacing between billboards (500 feet radial), and a 200-foot buffer from any residential district.

Faces are capped at 288 square feet with double-face construction allowed but stacked faces barred, and height tops out at 80 feet. Multi-prism billboards are treated the same as any other billboard for these purposes. , layering state outdoor advertising control on top of the city's illumination and placement rules. Digital billboards carry their own brightness and glare requirements under item 12 of the same subsection, a separate technical standard from this general illumination allowance.
