Old Bridge, NJ Outdoor Lighting: Billboard Lighting (2026)

Old Bridge Township Code § 250-41Z(14) sets the lighting window for billboards permitted along the State Route 18 and Route 9 corridors: the advertising surface may be lighted, either internally or externally, only from dusk until 11:00 p.m. Fixtures must be aimed so they do not cause glare on any street or building nearby, addressing driver distraction and spillover onto adjoining properties. The same subsection of the ordinance, § 250-41Z(12), separately prohibits any billboard that flashes, blinks, moves, simulates motion, or carries an animated display or full-motion video, which functions as a companion lighting-behavior restriction alongside the dusk-to-11:00-p.m. curfew.

Together these rules mean a billboard owner in Old Bridge can illuminate a sign face during evening hours but must shut the lighting off by 11:00 p.m. and can never use dynamic or blinking illumination effects, regardless of the hour. Because billboards are a conditional use under § 250-41, the lighting plan is reviewed by the Planning Board as part of the site plan, and any change to the lighting scheme after approval requires an amended application to the Board rather than a simple lighting-permit swap from the Construction Code Office.
