Old Bridge, NJ Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Old Bridge Township's Noise Code regulates amplified and general sound equipment through two adjoining subsections. Section 300-4H covers self-contained, portable, hand-held music or sound amplification or reproduction equipment used on public spaces or public rights-of-way: between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. it cannot be plainly audible 50 feet in any direction from the operator, and between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. it cannot be plainly audible to anyone but the operator at all, a near-total nighttime ban on public-space boomboxes and portable speakers. Section 300-4I then applies more broadly to music or sound amplification or reproduction equipment, radios, televisions, phonographs, CD players, musical instruments, percussion instruments, and other sound-generating devices wherever located, barring them from being plainly audible at a residential property line or through a partition shared by two parties in a building between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Both rely on the Code's 'plainly audible' standard at § 300-1, which is satisfied by detecting a sound's rhythmic bass component alone. Chapter 300, adopted by Ordinance No. 2010-05, applies to public spaces, rights-of-way, residential and multi-dwelling properties alike under § 300-2, and the Old Bridge Township Police enforce it under § 300-3A, with authority to refer sound-level measurement disputes to the Middlesex County Health Department under § 300-3B(6). A conviction defaults to the Code's general penalty at § 1-3: a fine up to $1,250, up to 90 days of imprisonment or community service, or a combination, with each night of continued amplified noise chargeable as a separate offense under § 1-4.
