Tyler, TX Outdoor Lighting: Dark Sky Rules (2026)

Tyler has no astronomical dark-sky ordinance, but Sec. 10-440 of the Unified Development Code imposes real light-pollution controls. The light source of every site fixture must be completely concealed and fully shielded within opaque housing so it is not visible from any street right-of-way, and fixtures must be mounted so the cone of light does not cross onto neighboring property. Illumination measured at three feet above the property line may not exceed 0.2 foot-candles adjacent to residential uses or 1 foot-candle adjacent to nonresidential areas. Only incandescent, fluorescent, color-corrected high-pressure sodium, LED, or metal halide lamps are allowed. These standards apply to new development at plan review.
