Tyler, TX Landscaping Rules: Artificial Turf (2026)

Homeowners in Tyler may install artificial turf on single-family lots; there is no citywide prohibition. In regulated development, however, the landscape code gives it no credit: Sec. 10-305(a)(5) provides that artificial plants are not acceptable in satisfying the code, so required landscape areas and tree counts must use living, approved plant material. Owners installing turf should still address drainage and stormwater runoff and follow any HOA appearance rules. Because Tyler's watering restrictions limit lawn irrigation to two days a week, some residents turn to turf or drought-tolerant landscaping to cut water use, but it will not offset required plantings on a commercial or multifamily site.
