Lyon County, NV Outdoor Lighting: Light Trespass & Shielding (2026)

Lyon County Code § 15.335.03(Y)(10), written for kennels, breeder facilities and veterinary hospitals/clinics, requires that all outdoor lights be shielded to direct light and glare onto the facility's own premises. The fixtures may be bright enough to serve security, but the light and glare must be deflected, shaded and focused away from any adjoining property. The same shielding language, worded slightly differently use by use, recurs through the same table of performance standards for other listed uses: convenience stores with and without petroleum sales require lighting 'shielded to prevent light and glare spillover onto adjacent properties,' a farm market's lighting must be 'shielded to prevent light and glare spillover,' and country club, swim club and government storage-only uses each require amenity or outdoor storage lighting 'designed such that it does not spill over onto adjacent properties.' Community Development checks these lighting standards, along with parking and buffer requirements, during site plan and design review under Chapter 235 before it will approve one of these listed uses.

Because the shielding duty is written into the use-specific performance standards in Chapter 335 rather than into a stand-alone, county-wide exterior lighting rule, it binds the businesses and facilities named on the Table 15.335-1 use list, but the code as printed does not extend an equivalent shielding mandate to an ordinary single-family home's porch or yard light.
