Vehicles left on public streets more than 72 hours, or on private property in inoperable condition (flat tires, expired registration, missing parts) for more than 7 days, are abandoned under Cedar Hill rules and TX Transportation Code Ch. 683 and may be towed.
Cedar Hill defines an abandoned vehicle, consistent with Texas Transportation Code Ch. 683, as: (a) any vehicle left on a public street for more than 72 consecutive hours; (b) any vehicle on a public right-of-way that is wrecked, dismantled, or partly dismantled; (c) any vehicle on private property that is in an inoperable condition β including flat tires, expired registration over 30 days, missing wheels/engine parts, broken windows, or otherwise visibly out of service β for more than 7 days unless stored entirely within an enclosed garage. Code Enforcement tags suspect vehicles with a notice; if not corrected within the posted period (typically 10 days for private property), the city issues citations and may authorize a tow. Junked vehicles are declared a public nuisance under Ch. 50 and Texas Transportation Code Β§683.071-.078. Owners can recover towed vehicles by paying tow and storage fees plus any citation; unclaimed vehicles are auctioned per state law.
Class C misdemeanor citation up to $500 per occurrence. Tow and storage fees billed to the registered owner. Each day of continued violation is a separate offense. Liens on the property if the city must abate.
