Westland follows MCL 257.252 for abandoned vehicles. Vehicles left on public property 48 hours or on private property without permission may be tagged and towed after notice.
Under Michigan MCL 257.252, a vehicle is abandoned if left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours or on private property without owner consent. Westland Police tag abandoned vehicles, notify the Michigan Secretary of State, and arrange towing by rotation tow companies. Owners receive notice and have 20 days to reclaim the vehicle by paying towing, storage, and administrative fees. Unclaimed vehicles are sold at public auction after the statutory notice period. On residential private property, owners may request police removal of abandoned vehicles or file a nuisance complaint with Code Enforcement. Inoperable vehicles stored visibly on residential lots violate Westland property maintenance code and must be enclosed in a garage or removed.
