Under MCL 257.252 and Livonia City Code, vehicles left on public or private property for over 48 hours without proper registration may be declared abandoned and towed. Owners receive notice before disposal.
Michigan Compiled Law 257.252 sets the statewide framework for abandoned vehicles, and Livonia enforces it through the Police Department. A vehicle is considered abandoned if left on public property for 48 hours, left on private property for at least 24 hours without the property owners consent, or lacks current registration and appears inoperable. Inoperable vehicles stored on residential lots must be kept in an enclosed garage under Livonia zoning rules. Police mark suspect vehicles with a warning tag; if the vehicle is not moved, it is towed and the owner is notified by certified mail through the Secretary of State LEIN system. Owners have 20 days to redeem the vehicle by paying towing and storage fees. After redemption period, the vehicle may be sold or scrapped. The Livonia Police non-emergency line at 734-466-2470 handles abandoned vehicle reports.
