Alexandria, VA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Sec. 10-4-6(a) prohibits parking trucks or commercial vehicles, including buses or vans, on the streets of a residential district, except that a truck or commercial vehicle may sit for up to eight hours in any 24-hour period while being loaded or unloaded, or while its custodian is performing services for an abutting residence or site. Subsection (b) defines a commercial vehicle broadly as any motor vehicle, other than a passenger car or truck, designed or used to carry or deliver goods, transport workers for commerce or trade, or carry more than eight persons, and that displays business signage or is registered or leased to a business, school or commercial entity.

A truck is separately defined as any motor vehicle designed to transport property on its own structure with a registered gross weight over 7,500 pounds. Recreational vehicles and trailers are carved out of this section and instead regulated under the separate one-hour residential parking limit in Sec. 10-4-9. The city also separately bars businesses that service, repair, store or park customers' vehicles from parking those vehicles on any street under Sec. 10-4-7, and Sec. 10-4-46 restricts parking heavy vehicles in commercial business areas with its own escalating penalty schedule.
