Alexandria's Residential Permit Parking program (Sec. 5-8-77) restricts on-street parking in posted districts to 2-3 hours unless the vehicle has a district permit. A separate citywide 72-hour rule prohibits leaving any vehicle in the same on-street spot continuously.
In 1979 City Council designated Residential Permit Parking (RPP) districts under Section 5-8-77 of the City Code, primarily covering Old Town and residential blocks near Metrorail stations where parking demand was highest. Posted RPP signs limit non-permit parking to 2 or 3 hours during specified enforcement windows; residents within a district may obtain permits allowing them to park anywhere on RPP-signed block faces in their district. Permit holders are NOT exempt from the citywide 72-hour rule, which prohibits any vehicle from remaining in the same on-street location for more than 72 continuous hours. Visitor permits and temporary permits are available through the Alexandria parking portal.
Parking without a permit during enforced hours: standard parking citation. 72-hour violation: ticket and potential tow regardless of permit status.
