Smyrna, TN Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 15-622(1) prohibits parking any motor vehicle licensed or primarily used for commercial purposes and having a gross vehicular rated weight in excess of 12,000 pounds on a public street within a residential zoning district or on any residential lot of less than five acres. The owner cannot allow such a vehicle to sit on his or her own property either. Excluded are emergency service vehicles, refuse collection vehicles (handled in subsection (2)), and other vehicles actively performing a service between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., including moving vans and vehicles needed for construction purposes. A school bus used with a government entity, quasi-governmental entity, school district, or state recognized educational institution can be parked, two to a residential lot owned or occupied by the driver, in a rear or side yard with no part of the bus encroaching the front corner of the residence.

Refuse trucks: it is unlawful to park one within 200 feet of any residential dwelling for more than one hour during a 24-hour period, and it must be moved at least 500 feet before parking again.

Modified public transportation vehicles, meaning vehicles built to carry 15 or more passengers that are no longer in active government or school use, cannot be parked or stored in the front yard, driveway, or any area between the front building line and the street right-of-way of a residential lot. Temporary parking for loading and unloading is allowed for no more than 48 hours within 30 days. Lots of five acres or more and enclosed structures not visible from public streets are exempt. This subsection was added by Ordinance No. 25-30 on 11-13-2025.

Two neighboring sections tighten the rules. Section 15-606 makes it unlawful to store or park tractor trucks or tractor trailers on any residential property, except during active loading or unloading of no more than 24 hours. In commercial zones they must be enclosed, or behind the front setback line and a completely opaque fence, with existing violations brought into compliance within 30 days after notice. Industrial lots are exempt. Section 15-623 bars trucks over 12,000 pounds and any trailer from any street from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
