Smyrna, TN Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Smyrna handles loading zones with a single sentence. Section 15-614 says no person shall park a vehicle for any purpose or period of time other than for the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers or merchandise in any place marked by the town as a loading and unloading zone. The zone exists only where the Town has marked it, and the test is purpose and speed: passengers or merchandise, loaded or unloaded expeditiously.

Chapter 6 prints no hours of operation, no minute limit, and no permit or fee for using a marked zone. That is different from the meter rules in the same chapter, where § 15-615 fixes regulated hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on all days except Sundays and holidays declared by the Town Council. Marked zones are also backed by the first line of § 15-604, which prohibits parking in violation of any sign placed or erected by the state or town.

Loading language appears in several neighboring sections. In an alley, § 15-607 allows parking of a motorized vehicle only for the purpose of loading and unloading merchandise. Commercial vehicles over 12,000 pounds are barred from residential streets and lots under § 15-622, but vehicles actively performing a service between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., including moving vans and vehicles needed for construction purposes, are excluded. Section 15-623 exempts trucks and trailers parked on a street from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. while actually engaged in loading or unloading. Tractor trailers on residential property have an exception during active loading or unloading, but not beyond 24 hours (§ 15-606).
