Smyrna, TN Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 15-604 opens with a flat rule: no person shall park a vehicle in violation of any sign placed or erected by the state or the town. It then lists places where parking is off limits whether or not a sign is posted. Those include a sidewalk (a bicycle is the one exception, and only if it does not impede the normal and reasonable movement of pedestrian or other traffic), the front of any public or private driveway, an intersection, a pedestrian crosswalk, and the roadway side of any vehicle already stopped or parked at the curb.

Distances are printed for the rest. Stay 15 feet from a fire hydrant and 20 feet from a crosswalk at an intersection. Parking within 30 feet upon the approach of a flashing beacon, stop sign, or traffic-control signal at the side of the roadway is prohibited, and so is parking within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing. Fire stations get their own buffer: 20 feet from the driveway entrance, plus 75 feet from the entrance on the opposite side of the street when properly signposted. Approved fire lanes are covered on both public and private property, whether the curb is painted yellow or signs and markings say so.

Other sections of Title 15, Chapter 6 fill in the basics. Under § 15-601, a parked vehicle must have its right wheels approximately parallel to and within 18 inches of the right edge or curb, and on one-way streets without prohibiting signs the left side is allowed with the left wheels within 18 inches. Section 15-624 bars stopping on the roadway and forbids parking that leaves less than 14 feet of roadway width open, with a clear view of the stopped vehicle from 200 feet in each direction. Section 15-603 forbids occupying more than one designated space, and § 15-602 bars angle parking by any vehicle with a trailer attached or longer than 24 feet. Alleys are handled separately in § 15-607: no one can stop, stand, or park in an alley in a position that blocks the driveway entrance to abutting property.
