Smyrna, TN Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

The overnight rule in Smyrna is short and applies to every street in town. Section 15-608 of the Municipal Code bars parking any vehicle on any street from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., with one carve-out for a designated and marked parking spot and one exemption for emergency vehicles on emergency calls. A curb along an unmarked residential street therefore does not qualify.

A second overnight-style limit sits in § 15-601. It bars parking on any public street or alley within the fire limits between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and on any other public street or alley for more than eight consecutive hours, except in cases of medical emergency, without the prior approval of the Chief of Police. That gives a resident with a genuine need one named route: ask the Chief of Police before the vehicle is left.

Heavy vehicles face a longer overnight window. Section 15-623 prohibits parking a truck or motor vehicle of more than 12,000 pounds gross vehicle rated weight, or any trailer or semitrailer, whether or not attached to a tractor, on any street from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Trucks and trailers actually engaged in loading, unloading, or performing a service, including moving vans and vehicles needed for construction purposes, are excepted.

Enforcement runs through Title 15, Chapter 7. An officer who finds a vehicle without a driver parked in violation affixes a citation for the driver or owner to answer within 30 days (§ 15-703), and the Police Department can remove and impound an unattended vehicle that constitutes an obstruction or hazard to normal traffic (§ 15-704).
