Driveways in Long Beach must comply with LBMC Title 21 zoning standards. Vehicles must be parked on paved surfaces; parking on unpaved front yards is prohibited. Driveway widths and curb cut specifications are regulated by Public Works.
Under LBMC 21.41.281, no vehicle shall be parked in the front yard setback except on the driveway or on a paved area between the driveway and the nearest side property line. Recreational vehicles have separate provisions under LBMC 21.41.276. Under LBMC 10.22.025, the owner or lessee of property in a parking impacted area may park a vehicle in front of their own private driveway when a driveway parking permit is displayed, provided no such permit allows parking where parking is otherwise restricted by time, days, or specified hours. Parking on unpaved surfaces in the front yard (such as lawns or dirt) is a code enforcement violation. All parking surfaces must be paved per zoning regulations. The City requires that driveways be constructed to meet minimum standards for width, grade, and surfacing.
Violations of front yard parking restrictions are handled through code enforcement. Parking in front of a driveway without a valid permit may result in a parking citation. Standard parking fines are $69.
