Cumberland County, NC Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Sec. 5 covers off-street parking for single-family and two- to four-family homes in front and corner side yards. Every parked or stored vehicle, defined to include passenger cars, trucks of 13,000 pounds GVWR or less, vans and golf carts, must sit in a defined vehicular use area (subsection a). That area, measured within the first 40 feet back from the street right-of-way, cannot exceed the greater of 33 percent of the yard or 750 square feet, capped at half the minimum required yard area; there is no size limit beyond the first 40 feet (subsection b).

Heavier trucks, commercial vehicles and anything over 13,000 pounds GVWR cannot park in a front or corner side yard at all, per the cross-referenced heavy-vehicle standard in Sec. t, though vehicles at or under that weight are allowed (subsection c). Surfacing within 40 feet of the right-of-way must meet the Sec. c paving standard, though gravel or crushed stone at least two inches deep with a defined edge of landscape timbers, metal edging or low vegetation is allowed as an alternative; the City Manager may approve other alternative surfacing where topography, trees or existing structures make standard paving impractical (subsection d). Inoperable vehicles or equipment may be stored only inside an enclosed structure, never sitting exposed in the yard (subsection e).
