Pawtucket, RI Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Under Pawtucket City Code § 388-42, the Director of Public Works or a designee decides where passenger and freight curb loading zones go and must post signs marking them. Once posted, § 388-43 bars stopping, standing or parking in a passenger curb loading zone or bus stop for any purpose other than the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers. Freight zones are stricter under § 388-44: only a registered commercial vehicle may stop there, and only during the hours the zone's signage specifies, and only for the expeditious unloading, delivery, pickup or loading of materials.

A private passenger car parked in a freight zone, or any vehicle lingering past what loading actually requires, violates the section regardless of how long it has been there. The general fine schedule in § 388-5B(1) sets the penalty for 'parking in loading zone' at $25 per ticket, and that fine doubles if the registered owner does not plead not guilty within 14 days and pay within 14 days, then triples if unpaid after 28 days. Five or more unanswered violations authorize the Pawtucket Police Department to tow the vehicle to an authorized storage lot, where it stays until the owner pays everything owed under § 388-5B(2)(b).

Owners are jointly and individually liable for tickets issued to their vehicle unless they can show someone outside their control, and not an employee, parked it illegally. Tickets can be resolved by mail or in person at the Municipal Court Clerk's office within seven days of the violation under § 388-5C; missing that window can add administrative costs on top of the fine.
