New Berlin, WI Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Section 261-4 D of the New Berlin Code of Ordinances prohibits parking any vehicle on any street in the city between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless the vehicle holds a permit under Subsection D(1). The city posts reflectorized signs meeting Wisconsin Department of Transportation specifications at the corporate limits on state and county truck highways and connecting streets to give notice of the restriction, as required by section 84.02(11), Wis. Stats.

Residents who lack sufficient off-street parking for a vehicle may apply to the Police Department for an overnight parking permit tied to the residence the vehicle is parked next to. Permits run month-to-month, the fee (set by the Common Council) is paid at issuance, is non-refundable, is not prorated, and is not transferable to another vehicle or address. Instead of a physical decal, the Police Department records the permit holder's contact information, vehicle description and plate number, and the permit's valid dates directly in its records management system. No permit will issue if the requested parking location would endanger other street users.

The Police Department may also grant a one-time temporary overnight parking exception, capped at a single 72-hour period per month, without a fee, at the discretion of the Chief of Police. Every overnight parking privilege, whether a standing monthly permit or the 72-hour exception, is automatically suspended during any declared snow emergency under section 261-11, and the vehicle must be moved off the street for the duration.

Enforcement runs through section 261-15: a parking ticket is $10 if paid within 72 hours of the violation, escalating to added administrative costs of at least $25 after three days and $40 once the citation is referred to the Department of Transportation for a registration suspension.
