Idaho Falls City Code Sec. 9-4-3 bars parking any motor vehicle over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight in residential zones, except for expeditious loading. Large motorhomes and trailers are limited to two 24-hour periods on the street per week (Sec. 9-4-5), and alley parking requires 10 feet of clearance on each side.
Idaho Falls addresses oversized vehicles mainly by weight and by storage duration. Under Sec. 9-4-3, it is an infraction to park a motor vehicle having a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 pounds in any residentially-zoned district, unless the parking is necessary to load or unload in an expeditious manner. Large recreational vehicles are covered by Sec. 9-4-5, which makes it unlawful for a motorhome or trailer to be parked or stored for loading and unloading on a street or alley in excess of two (2) periods of twenty-four (24) hours within any 7-day time period, with a 300-foot 'same location' rule so a vehicle cannot simply be shuffled down the block. In alleys, Sec. 9-4-2 requires that at least ten (10) feet of clearance remain on each side of a vehicle between adjacent buildings or structures, which restricts where wide vehicles can stop even to load. The manner-of-parking rules in Sec. 9-4-6 also apply: a vehicle's wheels or rims may not sit on top of, behind the back of, or behind the gutter flow line of the curb. Vehicles unlawfully parked may be removed and impounded under Sec. 9-4-11, with a $15 impound fee plus towing and storage. Penalties for chapter violations are infractions with fines set by Council resolution (Sec. 9-4-28).
Parking a vehicle over 10,000 pounds GVW in a residential zone (Sec. 9-4-3), storing a motorhome or trailer on the street beyond two 24-hour periods per week (Sec. 9-4-5), or blocking an alley without 10 feet of clearance each side (Sec. 9-4-2) are infractions, and the vehicle may be impounded.
